When is it better to lay a roll lawn

The time for laying a roll lawn is limited by weather conditions and the availability of the material itself on sale. It would seem that the most suitable time is early spring, but even during this period it will hardly be possible to start ennobling the territory.

Although from the point of view of biological processes, spring works are welcome, but the problem will be the inability to purchase the material itself.

In early spring, lawns are simply not on sale, the reasons are not difficult to guess: winter frosts do not have the most favorable effect on the appearance of the green cover, the grass cover, as a result of freezing, partially or completely dies off. His appearance becomes not presentable.

To restore an attractive look, producers will need to thoroughly comb out the dried blades of grass, they usually do this in March. During this period, young shoots have not yet appeared, and old ones are combed out quite easily.

Further, it will take time for it to be completely covered with greens; during this period, fertilizers are applied. When the grass becomes high enough, it is carefully cut. Only after these procedures are the coating considered ready for sale.

If we take into account the duration of winter in the conditions of the Middle Lane, and the duration of the recovery period, which is from one to one and a half months, then the beginning of implementation usually coincides with the beginning of May. After a warm winter or early spring, the lawn trade can begin in mid-April.

Of course, if you are anxious to urgently plant greenery, then you can find a manufacturer who will sell the coating at an earlier date.

But it is unlikely that such a lawn will have a sufficiently attractive appearance.

Experts recommend planning work for May, if the site for laying is carefully prepared, then it will take one or two days to turn the site into an emerald lawn.

Summer is considered a good time for work. The grass grows actively during this period, the acquired coverage will look perfect. Of course, if the outside temperature is above + 30 C, then it is advisable to carry out the work in a short time. It is necessary to spread the rolls immediately after purchase, then carefully fill with water.

You can also plan laying in the fall, since the heat has subsided, it is easier for workers and grass to take root. You can lay the cover all autumn, before the onset of frost.

Rolled lawn care by month

It cannot be assumed that even a properly laid rolled lawn will delight the eyes throughout the summer and you will not need to do anything. Of course, like any other garden plants, the grass will require care and attention, an attentive attitude to its condition, adequate actions in case of problems.

The type of coverage will depend on:

  • how correct care is carried out,
  • are preventive measures taken,
  • do you own decorating techniques.

Careful attention to the condition of the grass, as well as constant competent care will maximize the service life and maintain a pleasant appearance.

It is more convenient to consider the rules of care not by months, but by seasons. This is what we are going to do next.

Let's watch a video about caring for a rolling lawn throughout the year:

Lawn care in spring

After the snow cover has melted, the growing season begins, therefore, the plants will need additional nutrition. Top dressing will help to replenish the stocks of nutrients in the soil. They produce it when systematic night frosts cease to be observed.

It is recommended to use special, complex fertilizers with a predominance of nitrogen. It is the nitrogen component that ensures active regeneration.

The best time is when the grass has not yet grown, otherwise it will be necessary to monitor so that the grass does not burn out due to exposure to sunlight.

You should remember the rules for fertilizing:

  • the soil must be moist;
  • the best time for application is before watering, in which case the fertilizers will be fully absorbed;
  • you can apply fertilizers manually, while controlling the uniformity of the application is mandatory;
  • it will be enough to apply 5 g of nitrogenous fertilizers per square meter of area.

Scarification of the lawn, i.e. combing it, is carried out in order to remove the remnants of dry grass and moss, if it appears.

The procedure is mandatory, because a layer of dry grass 1 cm thick already disrupts the normal flow of air, water, nutrients. Scarification is carried out in the spring; sudden movements can be traumatic for plants. Autumn scarification is carried out immediately before sowing grass and fertilizing the soil.

Scarification is performed manually, using a fan rake.

Aeration is an equally useful procedure; it is performed after scarification and fertilization. As a result, the oxygen supply to the plant roots improves, the quality of soil moisture increases.

The procedure consists in making holes of different diameters in the ground. For work, special devices or even ordinary forks are used, punctures are made to a depth of 8-10 cm, the distance between them should be about 15 cm.

The greatest effectiveness from the procedure is obtained in swampy areas covered with mosses, as well as in those places where bald spots have formed as a result of trampling.

Let's watch a video about caring for a rolled lawn in spring:

Summer care, when to mow for the first time

You can start mowing about a week after laying. The grass will grow back during this period, but since it was crumpled during transportation, the lawn will turn out to be shaggy, its surface will not be even.

It is recommended to mow only the top 2-3 cm of the blades of grass, the remaining vegetation should have a height of at least 6-8 cm.

The next mowing is performed as the grass grows, so that the lawn has an ideal appearance, mowing is performed every 7-10 days. This will allow the penetration of sunlight to the lower part of the stems, the green color of the grass will become more intense, and the lower leaves will stop turning yellow.

When performing a haircut, be guided by the following rules:

  • cutting plants too low can lead to thinning of the green space;
  • the grass is cut only when it dries out from the dew;
  • if each time you cut in a direction perpendicular to the previous one, then the mowing will be more even;
  • cut grass should be removed from the lawn.

Fertilizer and irrigation rates

For summer dressing, special fertilizers are used.

Ideal formula per square meter of area:

  • as before, the most relevant is the nitrogen component: 10 g per 1 sq. m .;
  • phosphorus will need 3 g per square meter;
  • potassium - 5 g.

Starting from July, the composition of the top dressing is slightly changed, with the same indicator of the nitrogen component, potassium will need 2.5 g, as well as phosphorus.

In summer, when the likelihood of drought increases, additional watering will be required.

Signs by which you can determine the dryness of the lawn:

  • dry soil to a depth of 10 cm;
  • dull grass that has lost its elasticity.

When watering, you should:

  • use an irrigation method rather than a jet method;
  • prevent the accumulation of water on the surface of the lawn, exclude the possibility of waterlogging;
  • the rate of introduced moisture per 1 square meter of area is 25 liters, natural precipitation should also be taken into account;
  • the best time for watering is morning or evening, water evaporation at this time is minimal;
  • watering should be done only if the topsoil dries up;
  • the frequency of watering should be adjusted depending on the type of soil and weather conditions;
  • watering is read enough when moisture penetrates into the soil to a depth of at least 15 cm.

Frequent watering with a small amount of water is not recommended, they lead to an incorrect, superficial growth of the root system.

The lawn needs more intensive watering after overseeding the grass and before emergence, after mowing, during the intensive growth of greenery.

How to deal with weeds

It is possible that they will periodically appear among the grass. The first and most successful option for their destruction would be the systematic mowing of the grass on the lawn - weeds do not tolerate such procedures well.

On young lawns, the method of mechanical removal of weeds is used, i.e. they are dug out with a spatula or other devices, an effective option, but quite laborious.

In the event of a large number of weeds, experts recommend using herbicides. Correctly selected, they practically do not harm the lawn grass, but weeds are completely exterminated.

Herbicides can be selective or continuous; they are released in liquid or powder form.

Handling herbicides should be done with care and using personal protective equipment. It is best to choose a quiet, windless day. It is not recommended to spray before rain. Powdered herbicides are applied to wet soil.

Features of autumn care

To ensure that your lawn recovers quickly after wintering, the following fall activities are recommended to prepare your lawn for wintering:

  • to increase the frost resistance of grasses, it is advisable to apply fertilizers containing phosphorus and potassium components, nitrogen-containing fertilizers should be abandoned.
  • in late September and early October, systematic haircuts should be stopped. The height of the grass during this period should be about 4-6 cm. It is recommended to systematically clean the lawn from fallen leaves.

For preventive purposes, an autumn treatment should be carried out aimed at combating fungal infections. Fundazol can be recommended as a fairly effective remedy.

You can do the last haircut before winter no later than the end of October.

Organization of wintering

In winter, the lawn also requires proper, if not care, then less - handling:

  • trample on the territory where the grass grows is impossible, with the onset of spring in trampled places the grass will be yellow;
  • the snow cover on the lawn should not be disturbed, but the formation of snowdrifts or icing must not be allowed, overcompaction of the snow cover will lead to a lack of oxygen. The ice crust must be removed.

How to restore a rolled lawn

To cope with the task of recovery, you will need to determine the reasons why the growth of grasses has slowed down or bald spots have appeared.

Perhaps it:

  • poor drainage, provoking stagnant water, the growth of mosses;
  • systematic walking on some part of the lawn;
  • lack of moisture or uneven watering;
  • the presence of weeds;
  • excess or lack of fertilizers, their uneven application;
  • lack of systematic haircuts.

After analyzing the condition and determining the cause, you can start correcting your mistakes. If you are not sure of the correct decision, it is better to consult a specialist.

Among the advantages of a roll coating, it should be noted the possibility of restoration of individual areas, by the type of patching.

If the lawn is too dry, you will need to carefully process it with a metal rake, add growth stimulants, and water it abundantly.

When organizing autowatering, investigate whether all plots will receive enough water.

If grass regrowth is slower in certain areas, it may be necessary to sow the grass.

If you need to perform a quick repair of green spaces, then they resort to replacing a section of sod. At the same time, the grass should be of the same type that the main lawn is sown with - so that the patch does not stand out against the general green background.

Sometimes it is rational to emphasize the patch by giving it the shape of a star, diamond, or circle. Such inserts will not only not spoil the lawn, but will also serve as its dyeing.

If the loss of decorativeness lies in an unsystematic mowing, i.e. the grass is clearly overgrown, then it should be cut in several steps, with each mowing the level of the lawn mower decreases. It will not be possible to mow too high vegetation "cleanly"; it is very difficult to achieve an excellent result.

To save yourself unnecessary problems, mow your lawn at least once every two weeks.
