Benefits of growing oyster mushrooms at home

Home-grown oyster mushrooms have a number of advantages over purchased ones.

So, the main advantages of self-cultivation include:

  • Price - the material made with one's own hand and the oyster mushroom grown from it will be much cheaper than the purchased one at cost;
  • The ability to control the quality of the product from the moment of disembarkation. Often, homemade mycelium not only does not lag behind that grown in the laboratory, but even surpasses it;
  • The danger of oyster mushroom accumulation of harmful substances is minimized. Since mushrooms are inherently sponges that absorb all useful and harmful elements, growing at home will avoid the danger of accumulating toxic substances.

The only drawback of this method is the slow growth of the product. This is due to the inability to recreate the laboratory conditions of the autoclave at home.

Oyster mushroom propagation methods

There are many ways, varying in difficulty.

The most popular among mushroom pickers are several:

  • Growing on wooden logs for three to five years. In order to grow oyster mushroom in this way, you need a freshly cut larch log, which must be placed in a dark place in the fresh air or indoors;
  • Growing on a nutritious substrate, the role of which is often played by a straw chop. However, this method is only suitable for short-term growing with yields of up to four months.

In order to grow oyster mushroom in any of these ways, you first need to have a mycelium.

The latter is necessarily introduced into the nutrient substrate, on which it germinates or is infected with the mycelium of the log.

You can either place it in a hole under a log, or close it up into small holes in it. While maintaining a constant temperature and humidity, the harvest will not be long in coming.

What is mycelium, its types

The mycelium, or vegetative body, is distinguished by the ability to form special organs and change its structure depending on environmental conditions.

Another distinctive feature is the formation of fine fibers that penetrate the tissues of trees, animal debris or substrate to absorb nutrients. Produced from spores in specialized laboratories.

It is subdivided into several types, depending on the structure.

How to grow mycelium, what conditions need to be created

The growing process takes place in several stages, each of which includes some features.

The latter is especially important to take into account to obtain the result:

  • The first stage is to obtain uterine mycelium, which is made in the laboratory from germinated spores or tissue parts.
  • The second stage is to obtain an intermediate form, for which it is necessary to transfer the spores from test tubes into the culture medium, for the development of the basis for sowing. For this, the wort is mixed with agar and brought on fire until it solidifies. The mixture is poured into sterilized tubes, which are placed at a slight angle until they cool. After that, particles of the uterine form are placed in a test tube with tweezers. The tube is closed with a stopper sterilized on an alcohol burner and sent to a dark place with a temperature of + 23-25oC for two weeks;
  • The third stage is to obtain the sowing form, which is sown directly into the substrate.
  • The production of a product requires the creation of absolutely sterile conditions. Before work, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the instruments and carry out all manipulations with medical gloves so that bacteria or mold do not get into the tubes.

This is a rather laborious method and is more suitable for industrial scale enterprises. To maintain a stable temperature and humidity, special equipment is needed and not every mushroom picker will have an autoclave at hand.

Cereal uterine mycelium and mycelium from mushroom legs

For the manufacture of grain mycelium, special laboratory conditions are often required, although the technology itself does not require special costs.

There is no specific scheme for growing planting material on grain, but the main method of home production is represented by the following points:

  • Grain is poured into a large aluminum container, which is filled with water, which should cover it by several centimeters;
  • The resulting mixture is placed on a stove and boiled for half an hour, after which it is filtered and the resulting grain is dried;
  • After sterilization, the grain is poured into the jars by two quarters. The filled containers are again steam sterilized;
  • After the jars have cooled, a small amount of grain is placed in each and a little mycelium is added.
  • The formation of white fluff, the first signs of growth, can be seen already on the third day after sowing, but the result will be really noticeable only by the end of the first week. Another seven days after that, it can be poured into the disinfected straw for growing oyster mushrooms.

The second method is the cultivation of material from mushroom legs.

For this it is recommended:

  • Cut a piece of unprinted corrugated cardboard and soak in heated water for an hour;
  • Cut the mushroom into fibers using a clean and sharp knife;
  • Prepare a container with drainage;
  • Remove the top layer of soaked cardboard, lay out the mushroom pieces and cover it with the removed layer;
  • Put the resulting blanks in a container and cover with polyethylene;
  • Make sure that the cardboard does not dry out, sprinkle it with water from time to time. Provide daily ventilation;
  • After a month and a half, when the cardboard is covered with white fluff, it can be transferred to a nutrient medium for subsequent cultivation and transplanting.

It is possible to grow a vegetative body in this way at home, although some effort will have to be made. Before starting, be patient.

How to make oyster mushroom mycelium at home without an autoclave

One of the main conditions for the success of the procedure is maintaining a stable temperature and humidity, which is not always possible at home.

However, in this case it is possible to make planting material, for this it is recommended:

  • Collect ripe mushroom caps and soak them in boiled water for one day;
  • Drain the water, and knead the hats;
  • Use the resulting gruel for sowing on a substrate or logs.

It is not recommended to store such material; you need to sow it immediately. In order for the procedure to be successful, it is important after sowing to maintain a high humidity in the room and a temperature of at least + 23 C.

Oyster mushroom mycelium storage

Since this product is not perishable, it is easy to store. So, in the winter it can be placed in the basement, and in the summer on the lower shelf of the refrigerator for one year.

To extend the storage line, you can place the product in a freezer at a temperature of -20 C, or in liquid nitrogen. It is important to remember that frequent defrosting and repeated freezing of the material can lead to its deterioration.

The seed can also be decomposed into vacuum bags, which was held in boiling water for fifteen minutes and then dried.

It should be borne in mind that if such a package breaks, you must immediately land, otherwise the material will deteriorate.

It is possible to make oyster mushroom mycelium at home, although you will have to work hard for this. However, the mushroom grown in this way will come out much cheaper and more environmentally friendly than the purchased one.
