How to get General tomato seedlings

Like all early outdoor tomatoes, this variety is grown through seedlings in temperate regions. In the southern regions, it can be sown directly into the ground.

Sowing time of seedlings

Given that the time for planting early tomatoes in open ground occurs in most regions only at the very end of May, then they need to be sown for seedlings between March 15 and 20. Seedlings will appear after a week, and by the time of transplanting, the seedlings will have reached the desired age and size. In regions with late frosts, seedlings can be sown in the first week of April.

Sowing seedlings

If the seedlings are intended for growing a commercial tomato, the seeds can be sown in boxes or seedling trays. For an amateur garden, you can use individual seedling cups with a capacity of 0.4 - 0.5 liters.

Selected containers are filled with earth. To do this, you can buy ready-made soil for crops from the Solanaceae family. You can make the mixture yourself, for this you need to take the following components:

  • one piece of garden land
  • one part of humus
  • a glass of wood ash for 10 kg of soil

After the seedling boxes or cups are filled with earth, it is well watered and the seeds are planted at a depth of no more than 0.4 - 0.5 cm into the soil. The containers are covered with glass or foil and placed in a warm room in a bright place. After emergence, the glass is removed.

At the stage of three to four true leaves, the seedlings dive, with the onset of warm weather, they are transplanted into open ground. Before transplanting, the seedlings are hardened for 8-9 days. To do this, in warm weather, it is taken out into the open air for several minutes, gradually extending the period of stay on it to several hours. Watering the seedlings abundantly 48 hours before planting in the ground, it is no longer watered.

Planting seedlings of tomatoes "General" in the ground

The place for placing tomatoes on the site should be in good sunlight. The best soils for them are sandy loam or loamy. When digging, you need to add 150 grams of complete mineral fertilizer per 1 sq. meter. Important! It is necessary to ensure that in the last three years potatoes, peppers, physalis, eggplants have not grown on the site.

The best precursors for tomatoes will be beans, peas, zucchini. On the bed prepared for planting, you need to fill the holes. This can be done with a flat cutter or a hoe. The depth of the holes should be about 15 cm. The distance between them is 0.3 - 0.4 m. It is most convenient to plant tomatoes in two rows. The distance between them is left at 0.4 - 0.5 meters.

After dissolving epin or another root formation stimulant in water, spill each well with a liter of such a solution. One seedling is placed in the hole, the holes are covered with earth. After that, the seedlings are watered again for a more even distribution of moisture.

During the season, a garden bed with tomatoes needs to be weeded 2-3 times, combining weed removal with loosening the soil and hilling bushes. This variety does not need to form a bush and remove stepchildren. Additional watering is needed in the absence of regular rainfall. It is enough to carry out about 8 waterings for the entire season, from planting to the beginning of ripening.

Watering should be combined with top dressing. At the stage of flowering and fruit setting, nitrogen and phosphorus-containing fertilizers are used. Closer to ripening, top dressing is carried out with potash mixtures. In all other respects, the cultivation of General F 1 tomatoes does not differ from the cultivation of other early varieties of this crop in open beds.
