Hazelnut "Sirena", description

It so happened that any of the types of nuts of the genus Hazelnuts are usually called hazelnuts. And large-fruited forms that are cultivated by humans are called hazelnuts. Most likely, several types of hazel participated in obtaining the most delicious and large hazelnuts:

  • common
  • pontic
  • lombard nut

Hazelnut "Sirena" - a variety of Polish selection. They took it out in 1969. It often grows in the form of a bush or short tree. Differs in good vigor after seedlings rooting. It can be 4 - 5 meters high. The leaves of the Siren hazelnut deserve special attention. They are large, oval, up to 11 cm long and up to 9 cm wide.

The sheet plates are highly corrugated. After blooming, the color of the leaves is claret-red. As it grows, it changes to burgundy - green. The lower, pubescent side of the leaf plates has clearly visible red-pink veins. The leaves sit on strongly pubescent, thin and long petioles.

Male inflorescences - earrings are arranged together in 2-3 pieces. Before opening, grayish red, firm. When fully expanded, they are red and friable. During the flowering period, they begin to grow very quickly. Within a few days, they lengthen up to 10 cm. Female flowers look like a bud and are located at the ends of the shoots.

You can distinguish them from a simple bud by a bunch of red stigmas. Very often, male flowers begin to dust earlier or later than the stigmas appear on female flowers. Fruits are slightly elongated, collected together in seedlings of 3-7 pieces. The nuts are enclosed in a wrapper, when fully ripe, it opens easily, freeing them.

The shell is thin, medium-sized kernel, filling the shell well. The color of the shell is red, the shell of the kernel is red with a bronze tint. The taste of the kernels is good. The frost resistance of Sirena hazelnuts is good, the plant can withstand temperatures below -24 degrees. Flowering is quite early, depending on the climate and weather, it can begin in March-April.

The fruits ripen in late September - early October. Self-fertility in the variety is low. To get a good harvest of nuts every year, the variety needs a pollinator. For these purposes, Lambert's red-leaved hazelnuts are suitable. The Sirena variety is itself a good pollinator for other hazelnut varieties. The plant can be recommended for cultivation in the sixth climatic zone.

How to plant and grow Siren hazelnuts

Planting a nut

For cultivation, you can purchase a ready-made seedling in a fruit nursery or use root shoots from a varietal plant. Important! the root of the planting shoot must be at least 20 cm in length. Growing by seed method is also acceptable. Nuts are sown in the fall. It is grown for two years. Then they are transplanted to a permanent place.

It is necessary to plant a nut in a place well-lit by the sun. The land for it must be chosen in composition close to forest, fertile, drained, with good moisture. In a small amateur garden, two or three Sirena hazelnut trees will suffice; on a large territory, they can be used to decorate a space in a natural style, to plant it on a small slope or near a pond.

You can plant walnut bushes along the border of the site. Planting time is autumn, a month before cold weather or spring, before bud break. Depending on the purpose of planting, plants can be placed at a distance of 2-4 meters. 5 kg of rotted manure mixed with 5 kg of leafy soil are introduced into the planting pit, measuring 60 cm by 60 cm.

Add two tablespoons of complex mineral fertilizer. Set the seedling so that the root collar is level with the ground. Cover the roots with soil, compact it. Water the plant with 1-2 buckets of water, mulch the trunk space after watering.

During the season, it is necessary to loosen the soil 3-4 times to a depth of no more than 7 cm. In the dry season, the plant is watered abundantly and the soil moisture is maintained under it. This is important for a plant, especially in the first two to three years of life, when its root system forms and grows.

To grow a healthy hazel you need:

  • Apply mineral dressing 3-4 times per season
  • remove weeds regularly
  • loosen the ground
  • carry out formative pruning

Formative pruning is carried out from 3-4 years of age. The plant can be formed as a bush, leaving 8-10 strong shoots, or as a tree, leaving one stem. After 20 years, the plant is rejuvenated pruning, replacing old trunks with new ones every three to four years. Hazelnut "Sirena" is a long-liver of the garden.
