Description of the fat woman

Crassula or Crassula is a succulent plant from the Crassula family. Naturally grows in Africa and Madagascar. The following species can be grown indoors:

  • Tree-like
  • Cooper's
  • Spatulate
  • Carpet

But of all these species, the tree-like bastard is the most widespread. It is about her that will be discussed below. The tree fat woman is a typical representative of succulent plants. It has a thick large trunk, which lignifies with age from below. The leaves are round, dense, glossy in appearance, somewhat reminiscent of coins. For which the plant actually received the name of the money tree.

With good care, the bastard plant in indoor conditions can grow to a height of over 1.5 meters. Flowering does not come soon, about 8-10 years from planting. Flowers, depending on the variety, can be pure white or slightly pinkish. Interesting! Due to its spectacular appearance, Crassula is very often used to create bonsai.

Growing conditions and care

The fat woman is a plant, although unpretentious, but for successful development, and even more so for flowering, she will need to create the appropriate conditions.

The fat woman is a light-loving plant, therefore, windows with a southern orientation are suitable for growing it. She feels as comfortable as possible on them. But during the summer heat, especially at noon, she still needs to arrange a light shade.

If possible, for the summer, the pot with the plant can be taken out into the garden. It is best to choose a place for placing a fat woman in the garden with light partial shade and protected from strong winds.

Soil and watering

Crassula has no special requirements for the composition of the soil mixture. A mixture of sod and leafy lands with the addition of river sand is suitable for her. The main thing when growing it is to equip good drainage. The root system of this plant is superficial. Therefore, wide and shallow flowerpots are best for growing a fat woman.

When watering a fat woman, moderation must be observed. In winter, however, it should be reduced to a minimum. In the summer, the soil in the pot with the bastard should always be in a slightly moist state, but in no case should moisture stagnate.

Top dressing and temperature

In the summer, during the period of intensive growth, the fat woman must be fed. To do this, you can use any complex mineral fertilizer for indoor plants. Top dressing is applied once every two weeks. In the period from October to February, the plant is not fed. At this time, it is at rest.

Crassula has no special requirements for temperature. She easily puts up with the summer heat. But in the autumn-winter period, it must be slightly reduced, it is best if it is 10-15 °. This lowering will avoid unnecessary stretching of the shoots.

Reproduction of a fat woman

You can propagate the money tree using cuttings. After cutting, they are dried for 3 days, and then planted in sand or peat. Rooting is usually quick and easy. After a month, the stalk, as a rule, is already starting to grow. Caring for a young plant is similar to caring for an adult specimen.

Crassula can be propagated even with leaves. They are broken off and placed on a moist substrate under a film. It takes 2 weeks for them to take root. It will not work to propagate the fat woman with the help of seeds, since it does not tie them in room conditions.

Potential growing problems and pests

The fat woman is a plant, although unpretentious, but it will react to non-compliance with growing conditions. The most common problems when growing Crassula are: Leaves change color or fall off. Most often this indicates fungal diseases of the plant. The main reason for their appearance is cold watering or flooding.

The leaves became lethargic. Most often, this symptom is starting to develop root rot. It is necessary to immediately inspect the root system of the plant and treat the affected areas. If the roots can no longer be saved, you can try to re-root the plant or remove cuttings from it for further reproduction.

Long and thin shoots. This phenomenon in the fat woman is observed as a result of a warm wintering with insufficient lighting. Instead of resting, the plant continues to grow and stretch.

Pests very rarely affect Crassula, but sometimes it still happens. Most often, the following types of insects can be found on it:

  • Aphid
  • Spider mite
  • Whitefly
  • Mealybug

Aphids are a small pest that feeds on plant sap. It is very easy to destroy it. In most cases, it is enough to wash the plant once with a solution of laundry soap. The spider mite is a fairly resistant and dangerous pest. You need to deal with it with the help of special insect-acaricidal agents. For example, you can use "Actellic" or "Fitoverm".

Whitefly is a very small pest. Its presence is indicated by whitish spots on the leaves. To destroy the whitefly, you need to use insecticidal drugs of the systemic group. They have a long-term protective effect and accumulate in all parts of the plant.

Mealybug is another common indoor plant pest. Its distinguishing feature is a white discharge that resembles cotton wool in appearance.

Severely damages young shoots and leaves, thereby stopping plant growth. It is destroyed with contact action insecticides. It is not difficult to grow a money tree at home and bring it to bloom. The most important thing is to create conditions as close to natural as possible, and then the plant will certainly thank you with its flowering.
