Garlic for the winter: when to plant
For the winter, garlic is planted in the fall. Planting into the ground is performed 1-1.5 months before the onset of frost. The optimal time is late September - early October. In the southern and western regions, it can be planted later - in November. Traditional planting is carried out to a depth of 3-5 cm.
In the northern regions, planting winter garlic requires a greater depth of 10-15 cm, therefore, it is carried out much earlier. The dates are stretched from late August to mid-October. Deeper planting promotes better rooting of the garlic.
Preparing for planting: the choice of soil and location
The soil for growing garlic should be loose and neutral in acidity. Best planted in loamy soils. The place for garlic should be lit up. If the site is in the shade, then a rare planting is performed. Freshly harvested garlic is used for autumn planting. It is important that the bulbs are well dried.
The garlic bulbs should be medium in size. They are divided into large and medium denticles. If the head contains only 2-3 cloves, then such garlic is not suitable for planting. Sick and damaged teeth are discarded. Next, rinse the planting material in a saline solution. 3 tablespoons of salt are diluted in 5 liters of water.
Then dip the teeth into a solution of copper sulfate. To prepare it, you need to dilute a tablespoon of vitriol in 10 liters of water. In this form, the teeth are planted for the winter. There is no need to remove scales from garlic, then the plant will be less susceptible to various diseases. The distance between large teeth should be about 6-8 cm, and between medium-sized ones about 4-6 cm.

Immediately before planting, the soil must be dug to a depth of about 20-30 cm. If there are weeds, they must be selected. Garden compost and phosphorus-potassium fertilizer are added to the soil. You will need 15-20 liters of compost per square meter. Fertilizer is diluted in water (10 liters 15 g). Instead of potash fertilizer, you can add one and a half liters of wood ash.
Planting winter garlic is carried out as follows: mark the planting sites on the garden bed. Make small grooves to a depth of 6-8 cm. Between plantings, the distance should be about 20 cm. Next, the chives are planted in the pits and deepened by 5-10 cm, depending on the planting date and the region. From tooth to tooth, it should be 6-8 cm. In this case, the planting material must be placed with the bottom down.
You can also put the teeth on the barrel when planting. In order for the garlic to winter well, add peat or humus to the garden bed after 14-18 days of the week. The layer thickness should be within 2 cm. It is recommended to plant garlic in the place where tomatoes, eggplants, pumpkin, peppers, cucumbers grew. It is undesirable to plant this crop after root crops. They deplete potassium in the soil, which negatively affects the development of the plant.
Care after landing
After planting the holes, cover them with compost and be sure to mulch. As mulch, you can use autumn leaves, sawdust, spruce branches, etc. With the onset of spring, the shelter is removed. With the appearance of the first shoots, loosening is carried out, since the soil becomes compacted during the winter. It is important to provide oxygen to the roots of the garlic.
Garlic care involves feeding. Garlic needs to be fed 2-3 times per season. As soon as the first shoots appeared, dilute 40 g of urea in 10 liters of water. You will need 2-3 liters of solution per square meter. The next feeding is carried out 14 days after the first. This uses bird droppings. To prepare the solution, take the ingredients in a ratio of 1:15. The second top dressing is usually combined with watering.
The last feeding is done in mid-June. Add 2 glasses of ash to 10 liters of water and mix. It is necessary to water the garlic once a week no more often. In case of drought, the amount of watering is increased. Loosening should be done after rain or watering.
To reduce watering, after adding water under the root of the bed, mulch so that the moisture does not evaporate quickly. It should be remembered that you do not need to water the garlic 2-3 weeks before harvesting. If you do not take this rule into account, then moisture-saturated garlic will not store well. Garlic is harvested in early August. If the inflorescence of the garlic is cracked or the leaves have completely died, then these are clear signs of harvesting.
It is important not to be late with the harvest, as the bulb will disintegrate into cloves and cannot be stored in this form. There are no special requirements for growing winter garlic. The main thing is to land on time and prepare the planting material.
