Description of Lizikhiton Kamchatsky
Lysichiton belongs to the Aroid family. There are 2 types of plants: Kamchatka lysichiton and American lysichitum. Mainly the first species is grown in Russia. Lysichiton Kamchatka grows in swampy places. You can meet the plant in Kamchatka, Sakhalin, Kuril Islands, etc.
It is a perennial herb that has a thick and short rhizome. Lysichiton flowers resemble calla lilies, the same large and snow-white. Flowering begins in late spring and lasts almost all summer. The peduncle falls off and dries up after flowering. The flowers are small in size and are collected in an ear, the length of which does not exceed 13 cm, and the width is 3-4 cm. In their place, fruits are formed. Seed ripening is observed at the end of summer.
Large leaves are collected in a basal rosette and grow back after inflorescences. In length, the plate can reach 25-50 cm, and in width up to 30 cm. The color of the leaves is bright green, oval-elliptical, tapering downward. Lizichiton is not used for bouquets because of its unpleasant aroma.
The plant is winter hardy, so it can be grown in any region of Russia.
Lysichiton can grow in one place for a long time. The site for the plant must be selected in advance and carefully. It is recommended to plant on the banks of water bodies, in shady and semi-shady places. In landscape design, the plant is planted along artificial reservoirs, deepening by 5 cm. If there is no reservoir nearby, then with proper care, regularly moistening the soil, the plant can also grow well.
The soil for lysichitone should be fertile and peaty. The plant propagates by seeds. After sowing the seeds, flowering begins only after 4-5 years. Sowing of seeds is carried out in the fall. Trays are used for containers. Seedlings need to be watered regularly.
After sowing, the trays are placed in a room where the temperature will not exceed 15 degrees. With the appearance of sprouts, a pick is carried out into separate containers, immersing them in water. Planting in open ground is carried out after frost, in the spring. It should be remembered that young plants are most often attacked by snails.
These pests leave behind mucus, which leads to rotting of the plant. In addition, they eat foliage.
You can use vinegar to get rid of slugs. Dilute 50 ml of 9% vinegar in 10 liters of water and treat the cracks where the pests are hiding with it. Snails cannot stand the smell of sage, marjoram, mustard. These plants can be planted next to lysichiton, then snails will no longer appear.
In the early years, the plant grows slowly. The speed of plant development will also depend on the care of lysichitone. The plant must be watered regularly and the soil must not dry out. All summer lysichiton must be fed. For this purpose, fermented herb and infusion prepared from it are used. In terms of its qualities, it is not inferior to fertile silt.
The plant should be transplanted only at a young age. It is undesirable to divide and transplant an adult plant, since lysichiton tolerates these procedures very poorly.
Application of Lizichiton
The plant is considered poisonous, especially its flowers and rhizome. These parts contain alkaloids, saponin-like substances, glycosides. Boiled tops are used for pigs. The poisonous substances contained in the plant decompose after hot processing. In ancient times, the rhizome of the plant was boiled and dried. Before baking bread, it was added to flour.
In folk medicine, the rhizome of lysichitone is mainly used. An infusion based on Kamchatka lysichitone is used for snake bites. Infusions of the plant root are used for ulcers, boils and burns for quick healing. A decoction of lysichiton root is used to cleanse the blood. The leaves of the plant can be used for making various baskets and packing food. Thanks to the large shape of the leaves, it is possible to grow grass cover close to each other.
Another species of the Aroid family, Lysichitone American, contains calcium oxalate crystals. If the plant is consumed without treatment, this will lead to irritation of the oral mucosa, as well as the stomach. Before using plants for medicinal purposes, you should consult your doctor. Lysichiton is one of the plants that predicts the weather. If the white blanket deviates, then it will rain, and if it is adjacent to the inflorescence, then you can wait for sunny weather.
