When to plant carrots?

Initially, it is worth purchasing carrot seeds. To do this, a person needs to decide which variety will be grown. If there is a desire to feast on the fruits already in the summer, then it is recommended to purchase an early carrot. For winter storage, it is better to plant late varieties.

Sowing time is related to when the crop is ripe. Namely:

  • Early varieties are sown even before winter, as well as at the end of April.
  • Mid-season carrots are planted in early May
  • Planting of late varieties occurs in mid-June

If carrots are grown correctly, then the late species will ripen until mid-autumn. Experienced gardeners are engaged in planting at different times. If you plant a root crop before winter, then you can enjoy crispy and tasty vegetables throughout the summer. Often, planting in the spring and summer is carried out for harvesting for the winter.

How to prepare soil and seeds?

Before planting carrots, it is worth deciding where it will be grown. To do this, it is worth considering what garden crops have grown in the garden before. You also need to choose a place that is well lit by the sun. It is allowed to plant carrots in those beds where the following vegetables were previously grown:

  • Potatoes
  • Cucumbers
  • Cabbage
  • Tomatoes
  • Onion and garlic
  • Various greens

Carrots develop well on loamy or sandy loam soil. It should have a sufficient level of humus, and the acidity should be neutral. If you plant a root crop on acidic soil, then the risk of a variety of diseases increases. And this will affect the quality of the future harvest.

Initially, it is worthwhile to prepare the land for planting. It needs to be dug up. This manipulation is recommended to be carried out even in the autumn period, since carrots develop much better on settled ground. Experienced gardeners bring in humus, and in the spring they no longer dig up the soil again.

2 weeks before planting seeds, it is worth adding mineral fertilizers to the soil. There are some requirements for the soil during sowing. It should be dry and loose. Otherwise, the harvest will not be of a presentation. Not only the soil needs preparation, but also the seeds. To do this, it is worth carrying out the following manipulations:

  1. Seed material has a hard shell. For this reason, they will not germinate quickly. To speed up this process, the seeds are soaked in warm water for 2 hours before planting.
  2. The seed is placed on a damp cotton cloth and covered with the same cloth. In this form, the seeds should lie until they swell.
  3. It is worth systematically stirring the seed, making sure that the tissue is wet.
  4. After the seeds are swollen, they are placed in the refrigerator for 10 days. In this way, hardening occurs.

Planting and care rules

After germination and hardening, you can start planting itself. For this, grooves are made at the selected place. Their depth is about 3 cm. Between them there should be about 20 cm. After that, water is poured into the grooves made and the seeds are placed. Everything is covered with loose earth and compacted. After that, watering is carried out.

To make sprouts appear faster, experienced gardeners cover the planting with polyethylene film. It should be 15 cm above the ground. When the first shoots begin to break through, the film is removed. The seed material is small enough, so gardeners include imagination and come up with original planting methods. Many of them are often used today. Here is some of them:

Seeds are spread on river sand. Sometimes it is replaced with semolina. All this is mixed and poured into the grooves made. The seeds are attached to toilet paper so that there is a distance of 5-6 cm between them. After that, a ribbon of paper is placed in the grooves and covered with soil.

Many gardeners are leaning towards the simplest way. They simply fall asleep in the grooves of the seed material. But after the shoots appear, thinning will have to be carried out. It is recommended to select a seedbed by planting radishes along its edges, as it will appear much faster than carrots.

Experienced gardeners are also advised to plant onions nearby, as it emits special substances that drive away carrot flies.

Carrots are a root vegetable that needs a fairly moist soil. The soil should be regularly loosened and weeded. To keep moisture on the ground, it is recommended to spread straw or foliage next to it. Mulching should be done when the first leaves appear on the plant. If the seedlings appear too close to each other, they are thinned out.

When 20 days have passed after the emergence of a young plant, it is worth feeding. To do this, mix the following ingredients:

  • 5 grams of superphosphate
  • 3 grams of potassium sulfate
  • urea

A ten-liter bucket filled with water will require 1 tbsp. l. spoon of such a mixture. The second feeding is carried out after 15 days using a nitrophoska solution. If you stick to these simple rules, you can grow a great harvest, so carrots are planted in almost every vegetable garden. But not everyone gets a good harvest. To collect high-quality fruits, you should know how to plant seeds correctly, take care of the plant. If done correctly, then a delicious carrot will grow.
