Groundnuts: cultivation, tips and tricks

Many people love to feast on peanuts. Its second name is peanut, its cultivation is very similar to caring for potatoes.

Harvesting this plant is a lot of fun. Indeed, for good care, the bush will give a lot of nuts. To do this, you should know the nuances of growing this crop.

  • Cultivation technology and soil preparation
  • Sowing and watering
  • Plant care and harvest
  • For what reason are there no shoots?

Growing technology

Peanuts thrive on warm ground. It is also important for him to get proper lighting, so you should protect him from shadows.

You also need to pay attention to the soil, it should be saturated with calcium and magnesium. If the soil has high acidity, then you can add lime or chalk to it.

Peanuts will not be able to grow on saline soil. In this case, procedures should be carried out to reduce salinity, for this, for example, phosphogypsum is introduced.

The seeds are able to germinate if the temperature does not drop below 12-14 degrees. But best of all, if it is 25-30 degrees.

It is also important to keep an eye on the heat, as frost can be detrimental to the peanuts. If the temperature drops below freezing, the beans will lose their germination.

It is also important to keep the soil moist, as peanuts need it, especially when they start to bloom. But stagnation of water will also have a bad effect on the plant.

If you moisten the groundnut strongly in September, the fruits will ripen longer. It is required to adhere to all rules regarding the cultivation of peanuts.

Only in this case will it develop correctly and bear fruit. Otherwise, its roots may rot, stains from various diseases will appear on the leaves.

For good growth of the peanut, the soil must be prepared. It should be the same as for potatoes. To sow peanuts, beans and seeds are used. Better to choose seeds from the box.

Initially, they should be disinfected with a solution of potassium permanganate, and then they can be planted in the ground.

The main thing is that there is no more frost. Therefore, it is recommended to be guided by when the cucumbers are planted. Peanuts can be planted at the same time.

A hole is dug in the ground, into which 3-6 seeds are placed. There should be a distance of one meter between the rows. The depth should be about 15 centimeters.

Sowing and watering

When frosts stop appearing, and the soil warms up enough, then you can start planting a peanut. This happens in May.

It should also be borne in mind that frosts may return on May 20-25, which will have a detrimental effect on peanuts.

Seeds should be planted when they are practically dry. Some gardeners advise sowing whole beans. Everything that remains from the valves should be thrown into the hole, since the residues will later play the role of fertilizer for the roots.

It is best to sow peanuts in squares, but it is also not prohibited to do it in rows. It is necessary to carefully review the seeds, for sowing they are selected in large sizes. If you plant small beans, they will not sprout.

Peanuts love moisture, so you should be especially careful about watering. It is necessary to water the plant once every fortnight. The procedure should be frequent if the weather is hot.

This often happens in July and August. Water for irrigation should not be cold, it should be slightly warmed up from the sun's rays.

Plant care and harvest

Peanuts also need proper care, which consists in removing weeds, loosening. Also, one should not forget about watering, since the soil should not be allowed to dry out.

After the inflorescences appear, you should begin to spud the peanuts. It is best to perform this procedure after good watering.

And after the bush stops blooming, fruits begin to appear, hilling should be increased. Before harvesting is planned, watering should be stopped several weeks before.

For example, if the owners are going to pick peanuts in September, then it is not worth watering the peanuts from the second half of August.

If the area where the peanuts grow is overgrown with weeds, the harvest will be poor, or even absent altogether. Therefore, care must be taken to pay special attention.

Peanut fruits are improved when fertilizers are applied to the soil. This procedure must be repeated 3 times per season. This is especially important when leaves, fruits, buds appear.

In addition, pests can attack peanuts. Namely:

  • Caterpillars
  • Aphid
  • Thrips

Also, peanuts can suffer from diseases:

  • rotting stems and roots
  • viral disease
  • spotting due to fungi

In such situations, you need to immediately take certain measures to eliminate the problem. Otherwise, the plant may die.

It is difficult to say exactly when the peanuts will be ready for harvest, as the peanuts ripen under the ground.

Often, the fruit should be picked at a temperature of 10 degrees. To make sure that the crop is ripe, you can dig up one bean. By looking at it, you can assess the situation.

Harvesting should take place in dry weather. The bush should be easily pulled from the ground, while the leaves should still be green.

For digging, you can use a shovel, which pushes the bush and takes it out. If you skip the right time to harvest, then a huge number of beans will remain in the soil.

After that, you need to dry the dug out bushes. To do this, they are placed in a sunny place. They should lie down for about a week.

After that, you should shake the beans, if they ring, then this means that they are dry enough.

For what reason are there no shoots?

Sometimes, after sowing, seedlings do not appear. This can be influenced by a variety of reasons. Seeds could be damaged by insects, birds. Also beans may not sprout if planted dry.

Before planting seeds, they must be germinated. Also, some gardeners recommend growing seedlings. To do this, grow a 2-week-old plant in cups.

From this, the peanut will develop faster. Also, in this way, you can protect the plant from the bear, which spoils the seeds of various crops.

Therefore, it is better to sow seeds that have already sprouted. In addition, experienced gardeners make bait for the bear.

At first, when the beans have just been planted, they should be protected from birds, as they can find seeds.

You need to soak the beans at the end of April. After 10 days, sprouts will appear. For the effect to be better, you should use a solution of potassium permanganate. Plants that have sprouted are tempered.

To do this, during the day they are placed in a cool place, and at night they are taken indoors. This will make the peanuts better tolerate the cold.

Hardening takes several days. By the way, this procedure should be applied to all plants that love warmth. The emerging seedlings should be planted in cups.

But you can immediately place them in open ground, observing the planting rules. The planted plants must be covered with foil.

It is removed when the weather is hot. If you adhere to these rules, you can harvest a good harvest in the fall.
