The appearance and varieties of annual phlox

The flower has opposite oval leaves growing on a thin branched stem 10 to 30 cm high. The shape of the flower resembles a star with an eye in the center. The color of the flowers can be any, as well as their size. Among them there are numerous double options.

  1. Large-flowered plants include tall white, red varieties.
  2. Dwarf annual phloxes are represented by a large list of varieties, including "Snow Globe", "Isabella", "Defiance" and others.

Terry inflorescences can be found in any of these varieties. The plant belongs to cold-resistant, light-loving species, but reacts poorly to overheating of the root system.

Growing annual phlox

Like many annuals, phloxes grow successfully by sowing seeds in open ground or through specially grown seedlings. In any case, these flowers love a warm place, fertile soil, without stagnant water. If these conditions are feasible, then at the beginning of May, the seeds are simply laid out on the garden bed, slightly mulched with humus and covering material. After emergence, they need to be used only at night.

It must be borne in mind that Drummond's phlox does not tolerate a simple transplant from this bed very well. To implement the conceived composition, it is necessary to plant prepared seedlings along with a clod of earth, without disturbing the root system. Seeds are planted for seedlings in March

Seedlings appear in a week. After three weeks, you need to pick the sprouts into separate small cups. At first, the seedlings are protected from exposure to direct sunlight, which easily cause burns and slow down their overall growth and survival. To form a wide bush, pinching is done after the appearance of the fourth leaf. This is good because the thin stem worsens the decorative effect of the whole plant, especially if it also stretches unnecessarily during growth on the window.

One-year phlox is planted in a permanent place after the disappearance of spring frosts. In places with bright sun, bright flowers quickly fade, and more frequent watering is required. But partial shade in a warm place allows you to grow bushes with bright colors of numerous long-lived flowers. There is no need to carry out any special agrotechnical measures for the entire summer period.

Weeding, gentle loosening with simultaneous hilling, watering and feeding with organic matter and mineral fertilizers, like any annuals. The first feeding is recommended to be done with a manure solution at the beginning of June, the second two weeks later, also with the same solution, but with the addition of superphosphate or potassium salt to it. After a month, all annuals are well fertilized again.

Watering is best done in the evenings every day under the root of the plant. During the day, in the heat, it is better not to disturb them with any events.

Diseases of annual phlox

Unfortunately, one-year-old phlox is susceptible to many diseases that have to be dealt with. This is especially important not only from the aesthetic point of view, but also for those who like to collect their seeds for the purpose of planting them next year.

  1. The appearance of numerous variegated petals of the plant is especially often observed, which impairs the appearance and requires the immediate destruction of such bushes. You also need to act when powdery mildew appears, phimosis, a sign of which are dry leaves and very fragile shoots. One of the methods of combating these diseases is proposed to use colloidal sulfur sprayed over plants. At the first appearance of brown spots on the leaves of phlox associated with septoria, the entire bed must be treated with Bordeaux liquid.
  2. Verticillium wilting may appear in phlox planted in acidic soils. It manifests itself in the form of a white bloom on the leaves and stems. The disease destroys the root system and the plant dies. It is most correct to burn all diseased bushes in time.

Annual phloxes greatly adorn flower beds of any shape. But we must take into account that their ability to ascend and develop next year will not give such a beautiful garden. They may not bloom. Therefore, in the fall, it is better to dig everything up and prepare a place to meet with them next year. Moreover, if phloxes did not get sick and these are not F1 hybrids, then their own seeds will serve perfectly again.
