From the history of the walnut

The name of this famous tree is not directly related to Greece. His homeland is considered to be Asia Minor and Central Asia. The symbol of wealth and prosperity, brought to Russia from Greece a thousand years ago, was called differently by many peoples and was considered sacred.

Numerous legends and myths exist about the walnut. Among them, an interesting tradition was the tradition of the Romans to shower the bride and groom with walnuts, wishing them a happy and fruitful life. The Latin name "the royal acorn of Jupiter" confirms the opinion that he was the food of kings. In the country houses of France, a bag of nuts was hung from the ceiling in the hope of a rich and long life.

The shape of the walnut, which resembles the appearance of the human brain, attributed to him healing abilities for diseases associated with the head. The cultivation of walnut trees in their own gardens and plantations was first started by the Greeks. Since then, a lot has changed, cultivars have appeared, the conditions for care have been studied and the industrial production of this crop has begun in different countries.

Growing walnuts

Before deciding to plant this amazing tree on your site, you need to analyze its features and growth pattern. The main points are the following:

  1. A fast-growing tree of very large size and a life expectancy of up to 400 years.
  2. Fruiting begins at 6-8 years of growth, gradually increasing in volume.
  3. The tree does not tolerate close planting and itself interferes with the development of neighboring crops, and a powerful root system can damage nearby buildings.
  4. To obtain large yields, it is advisable to have 2-3 trees of different varieties, planted no closer than 5m from each other.
  5. Walnut refers to moisture and sun-loving trees. Severe frosts lead to freezing of branches and its complete death.
  6. Planting a tree in places with a close location of groundwater is not allowed.

Often the walnut was planted together with the appearance of a child in the family, because only subsequent generations can use its fruits. In small summer cottages, planting a walnut is completely optional, although not only nuts, which you can not expect, but also foliage and bark are useful in it.

Planting and breeding a walnut

Growing from seeds is the main method of propagation for walnuts. For this, the largest, tasty, thin-skinned fruits are selected. After removing the green peel, the kernels should dry out first in the sun, and then in a shady place in a draft. When planting in autumn this year, the fruits are not dried. In a previously prepared hole with a diameter of 1 m, 4 fruits are placed to a depth of 8 cm in mid-May.

Seedlings appear in 10 days and are not touched until next spring. Usually, this is a warning that the fruits should be inserted with the groove down. This is due to the emergence of a straight vertical seedling. It will be easier to work with it in the future, since it is easier to get a seedling with a deep central core, which, according to some agrotechnical methods, must be cut with the tip of a shovel a year before planting in a permanent place. This increases the size of the root system and speeds up the onset of fruiting of the tree.

It is best to transfer the seedling to a permanent place in the spring with a lump of earth and keeping the root length of 40 cm. The root collar should be 5 cm above the soil level. In this case, an increase in the thickness of the fertile soil layer must be done without fail. By introducing organic and mineral fertilizers into the hole, as well as land taken elsewhere.

It is recommended to pour new fertile soil into the trunk circle for several years, and a piece of film is placed on the bottom of the hole to stimulate the appearance of lateral roots. In the future, the already grown plant will adapt itself to any type of soil. Young seedlings must be provided with regular watering.

Plants grown from seeds rarely retain the properties of the original variety, and therefore they are used as a rootstock for subsequent grafting. Budding is carried out in the same year in June or a little later.

Cuttings are harvested from young fruit-bearing trees. To make the bark move away from the trunk more easily, it is recommended to feed the seedlings with nitrogen fertilizers in spring. The beginning of fruiting in grafted trees with a properly formed crown can occur at the 5th year of life.

An important agronomic measure when growing a tree with a beautiful shape is its correct pruning. Despite the fact that in the wild the tree grows without pruning, in the garden and on industrial plantations, convenient conditions for collecting fruits should be created.

Most often, a sparse crown of a tree is created when skeletal branches are placed singly and have large angles of connection with the trunk and adjacent branches. In the first year of pruning, 3 skeletal branches of the first order and a central conductor are left. In subsequent years, the formation of a spreading crown proceeds due to the growth of single branches preserved at a distance of 45 cm from each other.

The leading role of the conductor and the first skeletal branches remains throughout the growth of the tree. Sanitary pruning and vertical shoots "tops" pruned before the start of sap flow or in the fall.

Walnut varieties

There are 21 varieties of walnuts, but Ideal and Yaglydzhevus varieties, which are widespread in Crimea, are grown more often than others. In the regions of Belarus and Russia with not very cold winters, when choosing a variety of walnuts, early-growing forms are used, discovered by employees of experimental sites in the Tashkent region.

It was there that S.S. Kalmykov grade "Ideal". This early-growing variety begins to bear fruit already in the fifth year of growth. Its inflorescences form a cluster that gives several nuts at once. But the most useful feature of the variety is the ability of secondary flowering with a large number of nut ovaries.

All phases of nut development can be observed on one tree during the growing season. There are much fewer large-fruited varieties and their use is of particular interest to breeders.

The healing properties of walnuts

Traditional medicine in many countries used the natural properties of the nut to restore health in various diseases. The entire plant was used. In the conditions of severe wars, the leaves of this tree helped the wounded. Suffering from ulcers, boils, frostbite was relieved due to its bactericidal and anti-inflammatory properties. And now they are often used in dermatology and cosmetic purposes.

Crushed walnuts with honey have been known since the time of Avicenna for the treatment of tuberculosis. Anthelminthic, vitamin, tonic, used for gastrointestinal diseases, made from wood raw materials, it helps even with diabetes. The main thing is not to forget that the maximum benefit from a delicious walnut will be achieved with prolonged and high-quality chewing.

When celebrating the New Year, we must gratefully remember our grandparents, who brought us a very important food product in the form of a well-known walnut, which must be kept in a purified state to preserve its healing qualities. And it will be just interesting to grow this beautiful tree for your descendants.
