the fig belongs to a genus that includes numerous species, most of which are tropical, while this species is widespread in the Mediterranean basin; It is a medium-sized plant, with very large deciduous leaves, and with edible fruits. The leaves are light green, deeply lobed, rough to the touch, the trunk is gray and produces particular nodosit that give the tree an ancient and twisted appearance, clearly visible even in very young specimens. In spring and summer it produces large drop-shaped fruits, green or purple. It is not a bonsai recommended for beginners, due to the difficulty of making a plant with large leaves and fruits balanced.

Pruning and exposure




Pruning: it is pruned in early spring, to shape the hair in the desired shape, without ever exceeding; take advantage of the period after pruning to apply the wire. To reduce the size of the leaves, it is advisable to remove the larger ones from the plant, avoiding removing too many. Trim the buds leaving 2-3 leaves.
Display: the fig must be placed in a very bright position, even when exposed to direct sunlight; generally it does not fear the cold, but if the winters are particularly rigid and in the case of young specimens, it is advisable to repair the figs in a cold greenhouse, or under a south-facing canopy.

Watering: it does not require large quantities of water, it bears very short periods of safety very well; especially in winter to reduce the number of waterings, to allow the plant to go to complete rest. From April to October, provide fertilizer for bonsai every 15-20 days, mixed with water for watering.
Land: no special requirements; prepare a compost with peat and sand in equal parts, the fig tree adapts without any problem to any type of soil, as long as a good drainage is guaranteed to the pot.
Multiplication: in spring you can practice cuttings. Pests and diseases: pay attention to the molds that often strike the leaves, if the waterings are excessive the fruits can ferment.
