Lily: General information
The lily originates from the Balkan peninsula and from Asia Minor, from where it was imported to the rest of Europe. Tradition has it that the lily, originally, was a white and candid flower, which is precisely why the lily is a symbol of purity for Christians. To underline in this regard и
the fact that Saint Joseph is often represented with a stick from which they sprout
white lilies. A stylized lily is still considered the emblem
of the city of Florence, although, probably, the flower that you wanted to represent was the iris, as the hills that surrounded the city were full of these flowers. The mythology tells that the lily was born from a drop of milk fallen from Juno's breast while nursing the little Ercole.
The meaning of the lily is, therefore, that of purity and chastity.
