Fat plants

Mammillaria

General characteristics

this kind of succulent plants is one of the most numerous, and brings together several hundred species, which are native to Mexico and the southwestern United States. The species differ greatly in shape: there are, in fact, species with a cylindrical trunk, others with a globular trunk, and others can be grouped into very dense groups.
The plants are formed by a multitude of tubercles where on the apex are the thorns. Generally the flowers develop between two tubercles and are arranged in a crown on the tip of the plant. Mammillaria plants bloom from the first years of life and produce fruits that remain on the plant for some time.

Exposure

this type of plants does not need much care, and therefore the cultivation is quite simple. The sunny exposure is the optimal one, paying attention in the summer period not to expose it to the sun during the hottest hours of the day.
The irrigations must be not too frequent and must be suspended in the winter period.
In winter the plants need a rest period with a constant temperature of 12-14 degrees. This essence also withstands lower temperatures, but not below 6 degrees. Fertilization must be carried out only in the spring period, with phosphorus-based fertilizers. Mammillaria can be infested with cochineal and mites. For this reason it is advisable to make a preventive treatment once a year.
